Auto insurance coverage for trailers and recreational vehicles

If you own a trailer, such as a utility trailer, travel trailer, or horse trailer, it may not automatically be covered by your standard auto insurance policy. You may need to add specific coverage for the trailer. This coverage helps protect against damage to the trailer and liability for accidents caused by the trailer while it is being towed.

Recreational vehicles, including motorhomes, campervans, and fifth-wheel trailers, typically require specialized insurance coverage. RV insurance provides coverage for both the vehicle and the living quarters. It often includes liability coverage, collision and comprehensive coverage for the RV, personal property coverage for belongings inside the RV, and coverage for additional features like awnings or attached equipment.

Depending on your needs and preferences, additional optional coverages may be available for trailers and RVs. These can include coverage for roadside assistance, emergency expenses, vacation liability (coverage for injuries or property damage that occur while parked at a campsite), and total loss replacement (replacing your RV with a new one of similar value if it is totaled). The insurance coverage for trailers and RVs may depend on how you use them. If you use your RV as a primary residence, you may need specialized coverage known as full-time RV insurance.

Additionally, if you rent out your RV to others, you may require additional coverage options such as rental liability coverage or coverage for rental income loss. If you have a loan or lease on your trailer or RV, the lender or lessor may have specific insurance requirements. It's important to understand and meet these requirements to comply with your financing or leasing agreement.

It's important to consult with your insurance provider or agent to discuss your specific needs and ensure you have the appropriate coverage for your trailer or RV. They can guide you through the available options, coverage limits, and any additional endorsements or requirements based on your circumstances.
